New York Judge Blocks Motion Picture Group's Ban on Free Promotional Movies.

A Manhattan judge yesterday blocked the Motion Picture Association of America from carrying out a ban on free promotional movies.
Small-budget filmmakers sued the MPAA over the "screener" ban, saying it would hurt their chances for Oscar glory.
The MPAA said it imposed the ban for the year-end awards season to combat piracy.
"Justice prevailed," said Theodore Hope, the 41-year-old producer of "21 Grams," the much-praised indie flick starring Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro. "Independent films could have been seriously hurt by this."
