H.E. Butt Grocery Co. Joins Austin, Texas-Area Cell-Phone Collection Effort.

Dec. 9--That old cell phone sitting in the kitchen drawer can help raise money to help victims of domestic violence.

The Women's Advocacy Project and H.E. Butt Grocery Co. have teamed up to collect used cell phones, which will be sold to a Florida company that refurbishes them for sale overseas or strips them for parts.

The cell phone industry estimates that Americans retire 100 million cell phones a year. That number is expected to grow because of new rules that allow people to change cell phone providers but keep their phone numbers. Changing carriers means getting a new handset because phones work only with specific carriers.
