Holiday Retail Job Market May Be Sluggish.

Dec. 10--At the midpoint of the 2003 holiday season, students and others in search of a temporary job may find the sledding to be a little rough.
Analysts say the employment market remains soft, even in the important retail sector, as companies struggle with uncertain sales growth and try to hold the line on expenses.
"Retailers, like other sectors of the economy, are proceeding cautiously when it comes to adding workers," said John Challenger, chief executive of placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. in Chicago.
Nationwide, retail employment was down 35,000 jobs, about one-fifth of 1 percent, in November compared to a year...
