Houston-Area Kroger Store Gets Hispanic Makeover.

Dec. 10--Gone are the portobello mushrooms, replaced with plantains, papayas and a plethora of peppers at a southwest Houston-area Kroger store. Make way for the oversized pinatas, the World of Spice and the Wall of Savings.

The Gulfton Drive store recently got a makeover, complete with an outdoor sign in Spanish. Shoppers will be greeted today by mariachi bands and samples of the new fare, such as sugar cane stalks, live catfish and masa to make tamales.

The store design reflects long-standing changes in the Gulfton area, which is about 85 percent Hispanic, said Nick Benavidez, a Kroger district manager. Nearby are Cuban restaurants, Salvadoran grocery stores...
