Holiday Season Sees Increase in E-Mail Scams; eBay Becomes Latest Target.

Dec. 16--Just in time for the holidays, the Internet is teeming again with e-mail scammers hoping to lure victims who will give up personal identification or financial information by responding to official-looking but bogus messages online.

An increase in e-mail scams, experts say, is as common during the holidays as mall Santas and fruitcakes. One of the latest schemes uses an old strategy: Impersonating the popular online-auction giant, eBay Inc.

For weeks now, fake eBay messages have been circulating worldwide, sporting the company's familiar logo and directing consumers to an "official" Web site where they are asked to confirm their account...
