Southern Nevada Utilities Seek Regulatory Approval for Rate Hikes.

Dec. 21--Southern Nevada utility customers may be justified in feeling as if someone declared open season on their pocketbooks.

State Consumer Advocate Tim Hay estimates that state regulators this spring will be reviewing rate increase requests totaling $1 billion or more for Southwest Gas Corp.'s Southern Nevada service area and Nevada Power Co.

"That $1 billion is a conservative number from our standpoint," Hay said.

Already, utilities in Southern Nevada are proposing rate increases that would raise the typical residential consumer's monthly bills by a total of at least $17.75.
