Switching Cell Phone Providers, Keeping Same Number Proves Maddening for Some.

Dec. 23--Hank Weinstein tried to switch cell phone carriers and keep the same phone number. But the best he could hope for was to keep his sanity.

"All I would be told was, 'We're checking on it. We'll get back to you,' " said the 59-year-old Commack resident, who tried switching carriers for the family's three cell phone numbers on Nov. 24, the first day customers could carry their phone number to a new company.

But the family had to wait, and wait, and wait, juggling six phones: three from AT&T Wireless and three from their new carrier, Verizon Wireless.
