NAFTA Now 10 Years Old, Still Controversial.

Jan. 1--The North American Free Trade Agreement turns 10 today, a precedent-setting treaty that is just as likely to spark a fiery debate as when it was signed.

Established to eliminate costly trade barriers between the United States, Canada and Mexico, NAFTA has come to symbolize the pros and cons, successes and pains, of free-trade policies.

Supporters say that NAFTA delivered on its promise of providing cheaper imported goods to U.S. consumers, but critics maintain that NAFTA has cost millions of U.S. and Mexican workers their jobs, particularly in manufacturing.
