FCC Makes Example of Orange County, Calif.'s Fax.com.

Jan. 6--Federal regulators slapped Orange County telemarketer Fax.com with a record $5.4 million fine as part of a crackdown on unwanted telephone solicitations, including junk faxes.

Even though Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell said that he wants to make an example of Fax.com, it wasn't clear when the company's founders would get the message.

The Aliso Viejo headquarters of Fax.com were vacant after the fine was announced on Monday. Its phone lines were dead. A St. Louis attorney who represents the company declined to comment, saying she couldn't reach Fax.com co-founder Kevin Katz to discuss the development.
