Boston-Area River's Clams Stir Up Questions.

Jan. 4--Local clammers should find out during the next few months how they will be affected by the reopening of the Merrimack River clam flats, an area that has been shut down to those in the industry for 18 years.

As Newbury, Salisbury, and Newburyport work together with the state to set up rules for the reopening -- including permit fees and possible limits on the number of diggers -- questions have surfaced about who will benefit from the opening, who will suffer, how the Shellfish Purification Plant in Newburyport will handle an influx of clams to clean, and what the clams will taste like after years in a dormant flat.
