Company to Conduct Background Checks for Penn State University Job Applicants.

Jan. 6--Beginning this semester, all Penn State job applicants must undergo criminal background checks -- including potential faculty hires.

The Irvine, Ca., company HireRight Inc. will conduct the checks, said Robert Secor, vice provost for academic affairs at Penn State. Secor said he's not sure how much the university will pay for the service.

Background checks had previously been reserved for staff positions, but the practice was questioned after the discovery that a former Penn State professor had been convicted of a triple murder in 1966.
