Internet Service Provider Earthlink to Lay Off 1,300 Employees.

Jan. 7--EarthLink Inc. said Tuesday it will lay off 1,300 employees, including more than 450 in Roseville, as it outsources call center operations.
The Internet service provider said the employees in Roseville; San Jose; Pasadena; and Harrisburg, Pa., would be fired by March 31. EarthLink said the laid-off employees will be given outplacement assistance and severance benefits, but it would not be specific.
The call center closing deals another blow to the Sacramento area, which has worked to gain the reputation of being the call center hub of the West Coast. And it calls into question the wisdom of placing Sacramento's economic eggs in a back-office...
