U.S. Department of Defense to Begin Considering Base Closures for 2005.

Jan. 8--The heat is on for the Department of Defense's next round of base closings in 2005.
Congress gave the department permission to hold the round two years ago, but progress so far has moved at a snail's pace.
This year, however, will be filled with deadlines as base commanders report details about their installations and local communities rally to support their military posts.
"My personal opinion at the end of the day is there's nothing in Georgia that's absolutely a sacred cow or completely safe," said Hinesville Mayor Tom Ratcliffe, who serves on the Georgia Military Affairs Coordinating Committee.
