Layoffs May Take Place at Product-Safety Testing Firm's Melville, N.Y., Plant.

Jan. 10--Product-safety testing giant Underwriters Laboratories Inc. has begun a review of its East Coast operations that will likely result in layoffs at its large Melville facility, officials confirmed Friday.
Separately Friday, Techpack America, a cosmetics packaging company, said it will cease manufacturing operations at its Henlopen manufacturing plant in Melville, idling 226 people. The jobs will be transferred to plants in Mexico and Asia, where production costs are lower, Techpack said.
A phaseout of the Melville plant, which has been in operation since 1976, will begin in March and continue through year's end, said human resources vice president...
