Fellow Retailers Give Wal-Mart Boss Warm Reception at New York Conference.

Jan. 12--NEW YORK - Contrary to its ubiquitousness, chief executive H. Lee Scott told a gathering of retailers Sunday, "Wal-Mart doesn't want to take over the world."
Mr. Scott was responding to a question asking just that, after his keynote address opening the four-day conference of the National Retail Federation.
"There isn't a grand plan to own the world. We're 8 percent of U.S. retail sales excluding auto and restaurants," he said.
Mr. Scott said he expects the first half of this year to remain strong because lower tax withholdings and bigger refunds will mean shoppers have more discretionary dollars.
