U.S. Airline Industry Poised to Close Books on Miserable Financial Period.

Jan. 13--The airline industry may begin marking the end to its worst-ever financial period Wednesday when the first of the major carriers closes its books on a miserable 2003.

A collective $5 billion loss will go down as just half as bad as 2002's red ink. But carriers, starting Wednesday with Delta Air Lines Inc., are expected to be upbeat about either breaking even or -- gasp -- actually making money in the near future.

But don't think for a second that the industry's woes are gone for good.

A consensus of Wall Street analysts believes than on Jan. 21 Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines Inc., will report a loss for the quarter...
