Wal-Mart, Metro Group Discuss Technology Plans at Annual Retail Meeting.

Jan. 13--NEW YORK -- What if you scanned and bagged your groceries as you shopped, so you didn't have to unload your cart at the checkout aisle -- and the produce scale could tell a bell pepper from a poblano?

That technology exists today, but it will be years before it reaches your corner supermarket.

Unless you live in Germany. Metro Group, the world's fifth-largest retailer, said Monday that it plans to install the intelligent scale and the self-scanning shopping cart this year in stores in its home country.
