Alabama's Trucking Industry Adjusts to New Safety Regulations.

Jan. 12--New safety rules designed to keep truck drivers more rested and alert are in many cases causing a short-term side effect: confusion.

Federal regulations that took effect Jan. 4 call for more regular work and rest hours for drivers, creating safer highways for everyone.

The rules create a maximum 14-hour workday for truck drivers, with 11 hours of driving allowed after 10 hours off-duty.

Truckers previously had 15-hour workdays with 10 hours of driving allowed after eight hours off-duty. The old rules had been in effect since 1939. The rules apply only to property carriers, not buses.
