Apple Computer Enjoys Its Best Quarter in Four Years.

Jan. 15--Apple Computer reported its biggest quarter in four years on the strength of holiday sales of iBook laptops and iPod music players, and it forecast that this quarter will also show double-digit growth over last year's numbers.

For the quarter that ended Dec. 27, the company posted a net profit of $63 million, or 17 cents a share. That compares with a net loss of $8 million, or 2 cents a share, a year ago. Apple had $2 billion in sales, up 36 percent from the same period last year.

Though most of Apple's news was positive, there were a few dull spots, particularly the computer maker's profit margins. Gross margins fell from 27.1 percent to 26.7...
