Lake County, Fla., School District Fined for Incorrectly Filing Its Tax Forms.

Jan. 21--TAVARES, Fla. -- The Internal Revenue Service has fined the Lake County school district more than $226,000 for incorrectly filing its tax forms for the year 2000.

Although the fine was levied last June, School Board members weren't told about it until last month and discussed it at a workshop Tuesday only after inquiries from a Sentinel reporter.

The fine was levied for taxes filed during a year when the district hung on the edge of bankruptcy, having uncovered a $10 million shortfall.

School officials deny any wrongdoing and say they were filing the forms the way they were told.
