Small Miami-Area Advertising Agencies Survive in Industry Dominated by Giants.

Jan. 26--When Sandy Tinsley launched her Miami advertising agency in 1974 with just a phone and a desk, small independent shops were the bread and butter of the industry.

Today, four multinational holding companies dominate the advertising landscape and another large chunk of the business is in the hands of "junior" conglomerates.

"We were all independent back then," Tinsley said, reciting a list of former competitors. "But most are gone now."

Hitting the 30-year milestone this year and boasting $103 million in 2003 billings, Tinsley Advertising is not about to follow suit.
