Home-Building Tycoon Visits Waco, Texas, and Says Boom Should Continue.

Jan. 28--David Weekley of Houston builds 3,500 homes a year in the Southeast and Texas, and he said Tuesday he believes interest rates will remain low and that home building nationally will remain strong in 2004.

"Low interest rates have been a big driver of our business. The economy is picking up, so it should be another good year," said Weekley, during an interview following his talk at Baylor University.

Weekley founded David Weekley Homes in 1976, and it has become the second-largest privately owned builder of homes in America, behind only SheaHomes of Walnut, Calif. Last year, the company enjoyed sales of nearly $1 billion, Weekley said.
