Labor Bureau Says South Carolina Led Nation in Percentage of Jobs Lost in 2003.

Jan. 28--The number of wage earners in South Carolina fell by almost 41,000 in 2003, marking the steepest decline in the nation when measured on a percentage basis, according to figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The state's nonfarm payrolls shrank by 40,900, or 2.3 percent, to 1.77 million jobs last year from 1.82 million in December 2002, according to the government data.
Almost every employment sector that the BLS reviewed in South Carolina lost ground in 2003. The exception was health care and education, which together gained about 1,200 positions.
