New Jersey Students Protest High Cost of College Textbooks.

Jan. 30--Jessica Thomson is no slacker. The Rutgers University senior works part time as a waitress at Applebee's while she takes six classes in subjects ranging from British government to World War II.
Two weeks ago, though, the history major was dreading a perennial rite among college students -- the biannual trip to the campus bookstore to buy the tomes she'd be poring over this semester.
"I had to explain to my landlord that I couldn't pay my rent on time this month because I had to spend $300 for textbooks," Thomson said. "It was unexpected. I wasn't prepared to spend that much money."
