Feb. 1--Mercury took the first Americans into space.

Gemini trained them how to fly and walk up there.

Apollo brought them to the moon.

The shuttle brought us Challenger and Columbia.

Somehow we got it so right with our first three space programs -- but so wrong with the fourth.

The shuttle never inspired a nation. It never turned a generation of schoolkids toward engineering. It never got us into space routinely or cheaply. It never produced any groundbreaking research.
