Delays in Boeing's Air Force Tanker Deal May Force Layoffs in Wichita, Kan.

Feb. 14--Boeing Co. could decide soon to lay off workers in Wichita and Washington state because of delays in the 767 tanker deal with the Air Force, a Boeing executive reportedly said.

The $15 billion to $17 billion deal for 100 airborne tankers has been fraught with delays, studies and investigations.

George Muellner, Boeing's senior vice president for Air Force Systems, reportedly discussed the tanker program during a media briefing in Orlando on Thursday before an Air Force Association symposium.

According to Defense Daily, a defense industry publication, Muellner said tanker-related layoffs could occur "as soon as a month from now."
