Wake Forest University Student Creates Computer 'Away Message'-Reader Program.

Feb. 20--Nick Gray discovered he had too many friends.

Like hundreds of other Wake Forest University students, Gray relies heavily on the "buddy list" service available from America Online's Instant Messenger program.

The program lets users post "away messages," while they're off-line, allowing other users to know when a particular person is away from their computer.

But Gray's buddy list had grown too long, and it had become too daunting to click on each buddy, simply to read his or her away message, he said.

"I didn't want to waste time," Gray, 22, said.
