Feb. 20--While Walt Disney brass celebrated the launch of the $100 million Mission: Space ride at Epcot last year, Comcast Corp. bigwigs plotted a missile launch of their own -- straight at the heart of the entertainment giant in the form of a multibillion-dollar buyout offer.
The takeover bid, rebuffed by Disney's board this week, appears to have come out of the blue. But in fact it is part of a nationwide revival of mergers and acquisitions, the sometimes friendly but oftentimes bloody-knuckle battle for control of brands, capital and market share.
