Feb. 22--QUESTION: What are TIPS? Where can I buy them? And what are some of the risks and rewards of buying TIPS?

ANSWER: TIPS are "Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities."
Also known as Treasury Inflation-Indexed Securities, TIPS are issued by the U.S. government. They are issued in 10-year terms. They can be purchased through brokers, directly from the U.S. government, or within a mutual fund.
And, in recent years, it has been hard to find anyone to say a bad thing about TIPS. Institutional investors have grown to like them, after initially shying away from them when Uncle Sam first sold TIPS in 1997.
