Delay in Air Force Refueling Tanker Order Triggers Boeing Layoffs.

Feb. 21--Boeing will release 100 contract engineers in Wichita, Kan., and lay off up to 50 workers in the Puget Sound area as it slows development of 767 refueling tankers for the U.S. Air Force, according to a statement issued yesterday by Chief Executive Harry Stonecipher.

Another 600 workers across both sites will be redeployed to other projects starting Monday, mostly to programs building tankers for Italy and Japan and marketing tankers to other countries, a Boeing spokeswoman said.

Stonecipher said the actions are necessary because Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in early December halted talks between Boeing and the Air Force on a proposed 100-plane tanker deal.
