As Tobacco Sales Decline, Kentucky Farmers Look to Alternative Crops.

Feb. 24--Farmer Wayne Shumate started with only 2 acres of blackberries, just to try them out.

"What I envisioned was setting up an old roadside stand and selling them that way," he said.

But it didn't take long for the veteran businessman to realize that the potential for the venture was bigger than he'd envisioned.

Nearly 20 years later, the small business has blossomed into a thriving enterprise -- the largest blackberry operation east of the Mississippi -- reaping $400,000 last year.

"It's hard to believe," he said. "We started out thinking we'd just take a chance and see how it turned out. This is way bigger than we had in mind."...
