Efforts Can't Stop Closing of American Meter Factory in Erie, Pa.

Feb. 23--Millions of dollars are being spent locally on new programs to keep and attract businesses, but that hasn't stopped yet another company from closing its manufacturing facilities in Erie.

Local economic development officials say -- and a company official agrees -- that nothing realistically could have been done to keep American Meter Co.'s factory here.

The company, which makes natural gas measurement and control devices, has operated a factory at East 10th Street and Payne Avenue for 113 years, and at one time had 600 employees.

The factory will close its doors in the next few months, eliminating about a dozen union employees that are left....
