Martha Stewart's Defense Rests Case.

Feb. 26--Martha Stewart rested her case yesterday with just one defense witness, but he wound up adding more confusion than conclusion to perplexed jurors.

The sole witness was Steven Pearl, a lawyer who took notes for Stewart during her Feb. 4, 2002, meeting with the FBI.

Defense lawyers had hoped Pearl would contradict the FBI agent who took notes, but Pearl's notes were confounding and he couldn't remember who said what.

"I can't say with any degree of certainty whether those actual words were spoken," he said under cross-examination during his 45-minute stand stint.
