New Chief Takes Hatchet to Jobs at U.K. Television Giant ITV.

Feb. 27--ITV's chief executive Charles Allen is already swinging the axe -- less than a month after the group was formed by the merger of Carlton and Granada.

Up to 400 jobs are being cut from studios at its Central TV arm in the Midlands. Some 200 will go from the Nottingham studios, which are being closed. The rest could go from Birmingham, where 320 people work.

The broadcaster blames digital technology and "significant overcapacity." The Nottingham studio used to make The Price is Right quiz show, but now shows such as I'm A Celebrity -- Get Me Out Of Here! are filmed in the Australian jungle.
