Florida Blue Cross, Blue Shield to Stop Covering Gastric-Bypass Surgeries.

Mar. 2--Citing safety and cost concerns, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida has joined a growing list of insurers that will no longer pay for gastric-bypass surgery.
The procedure, also known as stomach stapling, has grown in popularity since celebrities such as TV weatherman Al Roker and singer Carnie Wilson lost large amounts of weight with the procedure.
But the spike in demand for the surgery, which is considered a last resort for morbidly obese people, has led to an increase in deaths and the potential for soaring costs, Blue Cross said.
The Jacksonville-based insurer said it will stop covering the surgery by the end of the year. United...
