Critics Blast Idea to Merge University of Missouri President, Chancellor Jobs.

Mar. 3--JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A proposal to merge the positions of University of Missouri system president and Columbia campus chancellor got a chilly reception during a Missouri Senate hearing yesterday.

A state senator and a UM alumnus told the Senate Education Committee that the move could marginalize the university system's other campuses. Two other senators, meanwhile, expressed reservations about changing an administrative structure agreed upon decades ago.

The committee heard testimony on a bill by Sen. Sarah Steelman that would prevent the UM president from also serving as a chancellor on one of the university system's four campuses.
