Proposed Bill Targets Companies that Sell Personal Information about Children.

Mar. 6--Most American adults realize they're in the cross-hairs of marketers. Spam, telemarketing calls and direct mail pitches confront us at every turn.

But what about children?

Two U.S. senators are convinced that marketing to children has gotten out of hand. Sens. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, have introduced a bill that would limit the sale of personally identifiable information that is used to market to children.

Their targets are companies such as the Student Marketing Group and American Student List. These "list brokers" vacuum up as much personal information as they can about children -- names, addresses, ages,...
