Sony Robot Conducts Performance of Beethoven's Fifth.

Mar. 9--TOKYO -- QRIO, a humanoid robot developed by Sony Corp., conducted Beethoven's Fifth Symphony on Tuesday at a public rehearsal by one of the largest orchestras in Japan.

Programmed with the symphony's tempo and other data, the robot waved its baton to direct the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, exaggerating its gestures during the famous introduction.

"We usually adjust our timing by paying attention to the conductor's breathing, but QRIO doesn't breathe, so it was a bit difficult to communicate with it," said violinist and concertmaster Eiji Arai.
