Mar. 13--A Pennsylvania American Water program that helps low-income customers pay their water bills has been expanded.
The utility company increased its H2O-Help to Others Program to provide a 50 percent discount to qualifying customers' monthly service charges.
Previously, the discount was 20 percent. The service charge averages $11.50 per month.
Last year, 6,345 households throughout the company's 35-county service area qualified for the break, said Lorri Lewis, communications manager at Pennsylvania American Water. The company is the largest water company in the state, providing water service to 616,228 customers.
