Pennsylvania's Gov. Rendell Calls for Mediation of Medical Lawsuits.

Mar. 25--HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Under a package of medical malpractice reforms being pushed by Gov. Ed Rendell, Pennsylvania hospitals whose doctors are accused of negligence would be forced to offer a pretrial settlement option to their patients before the matter goes to court.
Rendell is also proposing an expansion of judges' authority to limit "runaway jury awards," a three-year extension of the state program that pays catastrophic liability premiums for Pennsylvania's surgeons, and placement of a percentage cap on the fees attorneys can collect from malpractice awards.
