Mar. 25--Woolworths is scaling down its lossmaking Big W out-of-town warehouses and ramping up High Street refurbishments to improve returns.
The retailer beat forecasts with a 76 percent jump in pretax profits to UKpound 66.7 million last year, but this is small fry compared to the UKpound 2.8 billion group sales.
Shop sales, which include Woolies and MVC music outlets, are down 0.4 percent to UKpound 2.28 billion. Underlying sales are up a dreary 0.9 percent, but margins are improving. The strong performer is the group's music and DVD wholesale arm, which grew sales by 23 percent to UKpound 490 million, helped by a big contract with Tesco.
