Mar. 27--NEW KEY MAY EASE STARTING PROBLEM: QUESTION: Before he spends a nickel diagnosing his intermittent no-start condition, T.P. from Enfield (Auto Answers, March 13) should get a new ignition key made by a Chevrolet dealer.

His car almost certainly has GM's Pass-Key passive-security system for anti-theft purposes. The small Hall-effect sensor in his key can wear out and trigger an anti-theft response, or total shutdown of the ignition and fuel systems.

This can also occur if the key gets wet and he tries to start it. His waiting for five minutes and a successful restart was pretty much a dead giveaway.

I had the same problem in October...
