Washington State Lawmaker Sees Unexpected Results after Aiding Tacoma Plant.

Mar. 30--Usually, state lawmakers wait anxiously to learn whether the governor is going to sign their bills. But state Rep. Steve Kirby said he wouldn't lose sleep if a bill he championed to help reopen a local chemical plant gets vetoed.

"It wouldn't break my heart," Kirby said.

By his own account, the Tacoma Democrat "burned up a lot of political capital" shepherding a bill through the Legislature to give a $500,000 tax break to Pioneer Companies Inc. of Houston to restart its shuttered chlor-alkali plant on the Tacoma Tideflats.
