Apr. 1--KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The sales tax for merchants at Kansas City International Airport may go up to help finance renovation of American Airlines' nearby overhaul base.
The Kansas City Council's Aviation Committee on Wednesday approved a measure to give Mayor Kay Barnes authority to seek the creation of a community improvement district at KCI. The ordinance is expected to be approved by the full council today.
If approved, a community improvement district would lead to creation of a board that could then pass a sales tax increase for businesses operating at KCI, such as airport concessions, hotels and car rental agencies. The tax cannot exceed 1 percent.
