Atlantic Fishermen, Taxpayers, Rescuers Entangled in Whale Debate.

Apr. 2--As Kingfisher, the entangled North Atlantic right whale, meanders up the Atlantic coast this week, he remains oblivious to the debate his plight has touched off on land. Another species of mammals is weighing how much effort and money his life is worth and arguing over what got him into this predicament.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of marine mammals, reptiles and birds become entangled in ropes, nets and marine debris.

Many die, some break loose on their own and others are rescued by humans.

A 2003 study estimated that nearly 1,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises are lost every day as "by-catch" in fishermen's hauls....
