Regulators Back San Diego Gas & Electric Energy Plan.

Apr. 9--Despite opposition from consumer groups, state regulators have given tentative approval for San Diego Gas & Electric Co. to satisfy future regional energy needs by buying a proposed power plant in Escondido and contracting for electricity from a plant planned for Otay Mesa.

If either of two draft decisions now before the California Public Utilities Commission is approved in a vote scheduled May 6, SDG&E would buy the planned plant in North County from its Sempra Energy parent company and contract with Calpine Corp. for electricity from the Otay Mesa plant.
