Employees at Potsdam, N.Y., University Vote to Form School's First Union.

Apr. 8--POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Clarkson University's 97 physical plant, custodial and service workers became the school's first union Wednesday after three unsuccessful attempts in 15 years.

Workers voted 53-44 to join the Civil Service Employees Association, much to Clarkson's displeasure. Workers complained about a lack of job security and said management didn't listen to needs.

"Everybody's chests are standing out as far as they can and their heads are back up," said R. Douglas Arquette, a 20-year shipping and receiving employee.

Clarkson opposes unions.

"Obviously we're disappointed by the decision," said Rick D. Burt, Clarkson spokesman....
