BAE Systems to Cut 1,000 Jobs in Air Systems at Lancashire Plant.

Apr. 9--Defence giant BAE Systems is cutting 1,000 jobs at its air systems group in Lancashire as a global downturn in aerospace takes hold.

Workers involved in programmes including the Eurofighter Typhoon, Hawk trainer jet, Nimrod maritime patrol planes and the Joint Strike Fighter will be affected.

A BAE spokesman said: "Costs were reduced last year, job reduction was the next phase."

The job cuts come less than a week after 760 were axed at the company's shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

BAE's shares rose on the news -- up 4 pence to 214 pence.
