Japan Apparel Retailer Posts 50.1 Percent Rise in Interim Group Net Profit.

Apr. 15--TOKYO -- Leading casual wear retailer Fast Retailing Co. said Thursday it chalked up a consolidated net profit of 17.84 billion yen in the first half of the current business year, up 50.1 percent over a year earlier, although consumers are reluctant to spend and price competition is intensifying.
The company attributed the profit increase to stepped-up marketing efforts that resulted in a 2.9 percent rise in the number of visitors to its Uniqlo shops on a same-store basis during the six-month period to Feb. 29.
Based in the city of Yamaguchi, Fast Retailing also reported a pretax profit of 39.19 billion yen, up 67.7 percent, on a 10.6 percent rise in sales to...
