Oregon Cities Dodge EPA's Bad-Air List.

Apr. 16--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday identified 432 counties in 31 states that fail to meet federal air quality standards for ozone. None is in Oregon, but regulators say the state is not off the hook.

Portland comes close to exceeding federal smog standards on some summer days, said Bonnie Thie, a manager at the EPA's Northwest regional office in Seattle.

"If there's a stagnant period for more than one or two days of high temperatures and low wind, there's risk," she said.

Medford and Eugene also need to be vigilant, Thie said.
